The Facility

A space created for you

Most gyms and clinics serve everyone. Positive Direction Fitness serves only the PD community. Our facility, classes, and coaches focus on you and your goals.

Everyone understands

You never have to explain a tremor, a slower pace, or a rough day. Your fellow members and our coaches already get it.

Designed with safety in mind

Class levels, pacing, and exercises are built for Parkinson’s.

Community built in

Train alongside others on the same journey.

Directed by physical therapists who specialize in Parkinson’s

Positive Direction Fitness was founded by women who are licensed physical therapists. It’s not a general gym and not a clinic. Every member here lives with Parkinson’s, and the space, the classes, and the coaching are all shaped around it, so women and men train side by side with people who truly understand.

HSA/FSA EligibilityNEW

Our physician release form now incorporates an optional “Letter of Medical Necessity,” which may help your plan administrator determine HSA/FSA eligibility.

The Classes

What a class feels like

  1. Warm upGentle mobility and posture work to loosen stiffness.
  2. Non-contact boxingHit pads and bags, never each other. Fast, fun, and focused.
  3. StepFloor ladders and balance games to build confident footwork.
  4. Strength & powerFast, strong lifts build the strength and power for everyday moves like standing up, climbing stairs and catching your balance.

Adapted to your day. Low energy? Stiff shoulder? We meet you where you are.

In every class, you work on

Bigger steps. Long, heel-to-toe strides work against shuffling.
Steadier balance. Multi-direction stepping trains quick recovery.
Taller posture. Reaching and rotating keep your spine mobile.
Better multitasking. Dual-task drills practice moving and thinking at the same time, just like daily life.

Two levels. No competition. Your effort focused on your goals.

Level 1 - Active and independent members with limited balance or mobility challenges.

Level 2 - Members requiring mobility assistance, balance support and/or additional supervision.

Morning, afternoon and evening classes are offered Monday through Friday. Times vary with the class schedule and holidays.

“The training is designed to be challenging, not competitive. I appreciate the support and motivation when I’m having a rough day.”Bob B, member

Questions people ask first

What can exercise do for someone with Parkinson’s?

Parkinson’s Foundation and American College of Sports Medicine guidelines say exercise improves endurance, strength, balance, and mobility.1

Why Positive Direction Fitness instead of a regular gym?

Our program is designed specifically for people living with Parkinson’s and built on the kinds of exercise research supports. Every member shares your diagnosis, so you’re among people who understand. Our classes are directed by physical therapists who specialize in PD, so exercises are adapted as needed and you won’t be left to figure it out alone.

How is this different from physical therapy?

Physical therapy is usually a short, goal-based course of treatment. Positive Direction Fitness is an ongoing exercise program, and many members join after finishing LSVT BIG® or clinic therapy to keep their hard-earned gains.

Is there any contact? Will anyone hit me?

No. There’s no sparring, no opponent, and no contact. Our boxing-inspired movements use heavy bags, targets, and on occasion pads held by our coaches to train balance, coordination, and endurance.

Will I feel comfortable?

Yes. We welcome women and men at every stage of Parkinson’s and every fitness level, and we tailor the program to you.

What if I use a walker or cane, or I’m worried about falling?

We offer classes specifically for people who need mobility assistance.

Is it too late to start?

It’s never too late to start, but the sooner you start the more you have to gain. People with Parkinson’s who kept up regular exercise had slower declines in balance and walking, regardless of how active they were at diagnosis.3

Is it fun?

Yes. Classes are upbeat and social, with games that keep you moving and a group that cheers you on.

Do I need my doctor’s approval?

Yes. We ask every new member to have their physician’s okay to begin exercising, and we’ll send your doctor a short form.

Can I use my HSA or FSA?

Membership may be HSA/FSA eligible when a physician recommends the program as a Medical Necessity. Final eligibility is determined by the plan’s administrator. Our physician release form includes an optional HSA/FSA letter of medical necessity for your doctor to complete.

How will I know it’s helping?

You’ll have a baseline assessment when you start, and every member is offered a written annual progress report on balance, gait, strength, and fine motor coordination. We can share it with your doctor if you’d like.

What are the costs?

Call us to schedule a tour or observe a class. Our introductory package includes working with your doctor to get clearance for your participation, a baseline assessment, all the equipment you will need, and your first three classes for $165. Ongoing membership costs less than $20 per class, even lower if you attend more than twice a week. You may be able to use HSA/FSA funds.
